Educational Project or Road Launch? The Two Roads to the Electric Ciao
13 January 2025

As part of Ambra Italia's educational project, carried out in collaboration with Italian Technical and Professional Institutes, the transformation of the Ciao Piaggio into an e-bike is not limited to being a simple technical exercise. In fact, schools have two main options to develop the project: they can choose to transform the moped with the aim of placing it on public roads, or they can opt for a transformation for purely educational purposes, intended for indoor use or on private circuits. These two paths offer educational institutions different opportunities for educational growth for their students, but they also involve different challenges and responsibilities.

Entry on Public Roads: A Project with Concrete Responsibility

Choosing the option of entering public roads implies an elevated level of responsibility, which involves both the school and the students. In this mode, the transformed e-bike must comply with the UNI EN 15194:2018 standard, which regulates pedal-assisted cycles (EPAC) with regard to safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and mechanical and electrical compliance. Students not only engage with assembly and processing techniques, but also learn to ensure that their work meets high safety standards.

In this scenario, the institute is required to issue the "User Manual and E-Bike Kit Booklet" together with the Declarations of Conformity to the standard, confirming that the vehicle is suitable for circulation on public roads. The transformation process therefore becomes a path that introduces young technicians to the reality of legal regulations and certifications, making them aware of the responsibilities that derive from technical work in the mobility sector.

To verify that everything has been carried out correctly, Ambra Italia reserves the right to conduct an audit on the e-bike once the project is completed, ensuring that the technical specifications have been respected before the final test. This additional verification strengthens the students' educational path, offering them the opportunity to understand how quality control takes place in the industrial and legal fields, a valuable experience that prepares them for the world of work.

Purely Educational Purpose: Technical Training without Regulatory Constraints

The other option available to schools is the transformation of the Ciao for purely educational purposes, without the intention of placing it on public roads. In this case, it is not necessary to produce the Declarations of Conformity or the E-Bike booklet. The project remains within the school walls, and the transformed vehicle is intended to circulate on private circuits or to be used exclusively for educational purposes.

This modality offers students a more practical and experimental approach, allowing them to focus more on the technical aspects of the transformation without worrying about the regulatory aspects. However, the purely educational aspect does not detract from the value of the project: students still have the opportunity to test their skills, experimenting with innovative solutions and developing technical skills that can be useful in future professional careers.

The choice of this option can be particularly advantageous for institutes that want to privilege internal training or that have private circuits where they can test and test e-bikes, without having to deal with the regulations for circulation on public roads. Also in this case, the support of Ambra Italia remains fundamental, with continuous advice to ensure that the project maintains high quality standards, even if free of regulatory constraints related to road safety.

A Choice That Empowers Students

Opting for entry on public roads makes students more responsible, as it brings them closer to the working and industrial reality, where compliance with the rules is a crucial aspect. They must learn to manage the project with precision and awareness, as an e-bike that circulates on the road must be safe for the rider and for other road users.

On the other hand, the choice to develop the project with purely educational purposes also offers an important opportunity for growth, as it allows students to experiment freely, without the pressure of certifications. In both cases, students develop advanced technical skills and acquire an entrepreneurial mindset, getting used to working in an environment that requires precision, innovation, and compliance with quality standards.

Whether you choose the option of entering public roads or the educational one, the project to transform the Ciao Piaggio into an e-bike represents a unique opportunity for students to learn and grow. Ambra Italia offers the necessary support to ensure that the project is a success, regardless of the option chosen, contributing to the training of a new generation of trained and responsible technicians. The ultimate goal remains the same: to prepare young people to be protagonists of the sustainable mobility of the future.
